Morocco Reveals 91% of Wells Nationwide Are Unauthorized, Government Plans Action

The data from the census and control of wells, launched following the death of little Rayan are now known. More than 90% of the wells on Moroccan territory are not authorized.
More precisely, 91% of the wells built nationwide are illegal, said the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, speaking on Tuesday before the House of Advisors. The operation was carried out by the Hydraulic Basin Agencies, in coordination with the local authorities, he stressed.
To solve this problem, a counter will soon be set up to facilitate the granting of well drilling permits, announced the official, noting that this problem constitutes an obstacle for the ministry in terms of accurately identifying the amount of water used in rural areas.
Addressing the chapter on securing water supply, the head of the department explained that measures have been taken, including the establishment of a steering committee, to closely monitor the implementation of the planned projects and propose solutions according to the evolution of the water situation.
