Morocco Revamps Amazigh Language Curriculum for Primary Schools

A new Amazigh language curriculum project for the primary education cycle has just been developed by the Ministry of National Education. It should allow the development of new textbooks.

This project is the result of intense discussions between staff from the Ministry of National Education and the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM), the ministry’s statement notes, specifying that it will be submitted for opinion to Amazigh language inspectors and teachers. This, the ministry supports, will allow the start of the work of developing new Amazigh language textbooks for the next school year 2021-2022.

Through the realization of this project, the ministry intends to comply with Organic Law 26.16 defining the process of implementing the official status of Amazigh, as well as the modalities of its integration into education and priority areas of public life. However, it should be noted that the realization of an Amazigh language curriculum project is also part of the implementation of the recommendations of the meeting held on December 30 between the ministry and IRCAM, dedicated to examining ways to increase the pace of generalization of this language in the three school cycles, specifies the same source.

This meeting will allow the participants to update the Amazigh language curriculum according to a progressive approach from the 2021-2022 school year for the first years of the primary cycle, as a fundamental axis of the implementation of the roadmap relating to the integration of this language into education, it is also noted.
