Morocco Retrains Former 'Mule Women' as Smuggling Route Closes

The ["mule women"] who shuttle between Morocco and Sebta have benefited from training and project financing, after the definitive cessation of smuggling activities.

These women will not be unemployed, reassured the officials of the municipality of Mdiq, who plan to support them through a series of actions and financing decided by the city council, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.

In the past, this activity served as a livelihood for women in the region, the majority of whom reside in Fnideq, the rest living in Mdiq, Martil or Tetouan, the newspaper points out, stating that the latter have welcomed the reconversion plan proposed by the local authorities.

This is evidenced by the small structures created through cooperatives to market local products with the support of the relevant services. Others, on the other hand, have managed to take advantage of the sea, the forest and the mountain to innovate and embark on projects in harmony with the local environment. Another category of women, not mastering any other work and not having been trained in other fields, have worked in urban cleaning to feed their children.

In this wake, the governor announced that this year, some 2020 project ideas have been received. 1010 project leaders have been supported, while 293 projects have been financed. The total amount was around 14.3 million dirhams.
