Morocco’s Restaurant Industry in Crisis: 80% Face Bankruptcy Amid Pandemic

The health crisis related to the coronavirus is hitting Moroccan restaurateurs hard. 80% of restaurants are at risk of bankruptcy today.
40% of restaurants have been forced to close due to the pandemic. The health restrictions imposed by the government are the source of heavy economic consequences. Restaurateurs are struggling to repay bank loans, rents; to pay salary supplements, taxes, and other fees. According to them, the measures taken by the Economic Monitoring Committee (CVE) to support the employees of the sector, particularly the restaurants, are insufficient.
Faced with this situation, the Moroccan Franchise Federation has launched an appeal for help to the CVE. It has made a number of proposals. These include, among others, the suspension of eviction judgments for some members who have been unable to pay their rents, the implementation of a subsidy to cover 50% of rental charges, and the suspension of enforceable eviction decisions until June 2021. Professionals also propose that the amount of the "Relaunch Credit" currently limited to one month of turnover be increased to two months of turnover.
