Morocco Reports Spike in COVID-19 Cases: 129 New Infections in 24 Hours

Morocco recorded 129 new cases of Covid-19 contamination from Saturday, May 16 to Sunday, May 17, 2020. The number of positive cases now stands at 6,870.
According to the Ministry of Health, 173 recoveries were recorded in 24 hours, bringing the official balance sheet to 3,660 cases of recovery since the beginning of the epidemic in Morocco. As for the death toll, the rate remained stable with 192 deaths for 2.79%. No deaths were recorded in 24 hours.
Moreover, the number of screening tests is approaching the 5,000 PCR tests per day mark for the first time, i.e. 4,953 in total. According to the same source, this number is explained by the increase in accredited laboratories in several cities of the Kingdom and by the massive tests in industrial units. This decision was made to curb the new outbreaks in the professional environment.
For the ministry, 84% of the new infections are among contact cases. The majority of the new cases were recorded in the Casablanca-Settat region, more precisely in Casablanca where 3 clusters were discovered with 99 cases. Other cases were recorded in Marrakech-Safi, Fès-Meknès, Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Béni Mellal-Khénifra, the Oriental, and Souss-Massa.
