Morocco Reports Sharp Drop in Crime Rates During COVID-19 Lockdown

Crime cases decreased by 20% in March 2020 compared to the same period in 2019, i.e. 10,867 fewer cases, during the period of the state of health emergency.
Snatching cases decreased by 24% while economic and financial crimes decreased by 23%. This, despite the advent of new types of criminal acts such as fraud for the collection of donations, speculation on the prices of protective masks and the manufacture of counterfeit disinfection products, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
Crimes related to violence have also seen a significant decline, i.e. -67% for homicides and -175% for attempted homicides, while deaths from assault and battery have decreased by -250%.
As for crimes related to theft under threat of a bladed weapon, they have decreased by -52%. The same goes for qualified thefts (-28%) and sexual assaults (-41%), concludes the DGSN.
