Morocco Reports Record Spike in COVID-19 Cases, Strawberry Plant Cluster Identified

Morocco recorded 539 new coronavirus infections this Friday, the heaviest toll recorded in the kingdom since the start of the pandemic. The most affected region, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, accounts for 457 infections alone. Here’s why.
The rumors had it right and it is now the case. The 457 new coronavirus cases detected in the Kénitra region come mostly from a professional cluster.
It is, to be precise, a strawberry processing plant located in Lalla Mimouna, in the Kénitra region, where women are employed. According to the Ministry of Health, it is once again the non-compliance with instructions (distancing, masks...) that is the cause of this surge in figures.
A glimmer of hope, however, informs the Ministry, since the vast majority of cases are asymptomatic and should therefore be discharged from the hospital within about two weeks.
In addition to the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, four other regions were affected this Friday, June 19: Marrakech-Safi has 29 cases against 27 for Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima. As for Casablanca-Settat and Fès-Meknès, they each have 13 cases.
The announcement of these figures comes at a very bad time for the government, which plans to announce the first deconfinement measures in the very near future.
