Morocco Reports Over 13,000 COVID-19 Cases in Schools, Minister Says

The Minister of National Education indicated on Monday in Rabat that 13,619 cases of Covid-19 infection have been recorded among students and teaching, technical and administrative staff. Saïd Amzazi was responding to a central question on the "progress of the school year in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic" in the House of Representatives.
Despite the many provisions taken in schools, the virus has managed to take hold there. According to the minister’s details, the infection rate does not exceed 0.06% among students and 3% among educational, administrative and technical staff. He noted that the number of school establishments closed since the beginning of the school year has reached 468, including 107 private schools.
During his presentation, Saïd Amzazi also spoke about the reforms undertaken in education. The minister believes that the central challenge is to put in place sufficient financial coverage to implement the provisions of the reform within the set deadlines. For him, the state budget remains unable to bear alone the financial burden of the reform, especially with the economic consequences generated by the Covid-19 pandemic, reports the MAP.
In terms of administrative and management measures, Saïd Amzazi explained that his department had taken a series of measures over the past three months to accelerate the pace of reforms and give them strong momentum. These measures concern, according to him, the updating of the portfolio of strategic projects to implement the provisions of the framework law at the level of the three sectors of the system and which include 19 projects broken down into three areas: equity and equal opportunities, improving the quality of education and training, governance of the system and mobilization.
As for the current and future projects aimed at promoting the vocational training system, the minister affirmed that reflections are underway for the design and implementation of the axes of the new roadmap for the development of vocational training. This will be through the creation of Cities of Trades and Skills with the opening of the first cities in September 2021, specifies the same source.
