Morocco Reports 60% Drop in Forest Fires, 201 Hectares Affected in 2019

From January 1 to July 3, 2019, 127 forest fires in Morocco ravaged an area of 201 hectares, 70% of which consisted of secondary species and herbaceous formations, according to the balance sheet of the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification (HCEFLCD).
For the High Commission, the number of fires has decreased by 60%, contrary to the average of the last ten years.
Rabat-Salé-Zair is the most affected region, with 11 outbreaks of fire, for 70 hectares consumed. It is followed by the North-West region (Kénitra and Sidi Slimane), with 31 outbreaks of fire, for 54 hectares burned.
Three major components, namely the strengthening of prevention, the mapping of risk forecasting and the operationalization of the land and air intervention system against forest fires, are defined to counter this phenomenon.
