Morocco Reports 52% Drop in Covid-19 Cases, but Deaths Remain High

Covid-19 infection cases have decreased by 52% over the past two weeks in Morocco. "However, high numbers and rates of critical cases and deaths continue to be recorded," Abdelkrim Meziane Bellefquih warned.

Presenting the bi-weekly assessment of the epidemiological situation in the Kingdom, the head of the communicable diseases division at the ministry explained that this decline has been occurring for the fifth consecutive week, demonstrating the effectiveness of the preventive measures taken to curb the spread of the virus and their observance by citizens.

The analysis of the available data shows that positive cases have dropped from 42,424 weekly cases recorded at the end of August to 20,562 cases last week, a 52% decrease.

Similarly, the virus reproduction rate has fallen over the past two weeks, stabilizing at 0.86 while the positivity rate has dropped from 18% to 12% over the same period.

As for the number of active cases, they have dropped from 60,000 to less than 30,000 cases as of Monday, while the number of critical cases has fallen by 30%, from 2,537 two weeks ago to 1,764 as of Monday. The occupancy rate of beds dedicated to critical cases has dropped from 50% to 33% over the same period.

Regarding the Covid-19 vaccination operation, Meziane Bellefquih stressed that Morocco has exceeded 36 million injections, first and second doses, calling for the strictest respect of preventive and administrative measures and effective participation in the national vaccination campaign.
