Morocco Reports 625 Child COVID-19 Cases, Representing 9.4% of Total Infections

The cases of children testing positive for coronavirus in Morocco amount to 625, representing nearly 9.4% of all infections. To date, 315 children have been declared cured of covid-19, with only one death due to kidney failure.

During a webinar devoted to the theme of the child, in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, the director of epidemiology, Mohamed El Youbi, emphasized the significant increase in covid-19 screening tests in children and the gradual decrease in their positivity. For the framework of the Ministry of Health, the positivity rate in children slightly exceeds that of the rest of the population, with 20.8% in March, 15.1% in April and 6.5% in May.

Mohamed El Youbi also highlighted the clinical characteristics of contamination in children under 14 years of age, arguing in this regard that 57.3% of cases are asymptomatic, 39% mild, 3% moderate and 0.6% severe. According to the epidemiology specialist, the cough, fever, headaches and sore throats, symptoms observed in children with coronavirus, are similar to those of adults with an average incubation period of 5 days.

According to Professor of Pediatrics Robert Cohen, children had 10,000 times fewer coronavirus-related deaths, 1,000 times fewer severe forms, 100 times fewer hospitalizations and 10 times fewer patients. According to statistics, the child is less contagious than the adult.

As for the regional distribution of the cumulative pediatric incidence of coronavirus, the Drâa-Tafilalet region comes first, followed by Casablanca-Settat, Tanger-Tétouan-Hoceima and Marrakech-Safi. As for the regions of Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, they have no cases of infection in children.
