Morocco Reports 50,000 New Cancer Cases Annually, Health Ministry Emphasizes Prevention

Morocco records at least 50,000 new cancer cases of all types combined each year, according to the Ministry of Health. On the sidelines of the celebration of World Cancer Day, celebrated on February 4, the authorities are multiplying awareness-raising efforts for good prevention.
Among the most widespread types of cancer in society, the Head of the Cancer Prevention and Control Service at the Directorate of Epidemiology and Disease Control at the Ministry of Health cited lung and prostate cancer in men. Then, breast, cervical, lung and colorectal cancer in women, reports le Matin.
As for prevention, the official states that Morocco is making a significant effort to fight smoking, which would be the cause of 35% of lung cancers and 18.5% of all cancers.
For his part, Mohamed Charrouk, president of an association to fight cancer, denounced the high cost of treatments, particularly immunotherapy. A single session can cost up to 60,000 DH, knowing that the treatment usually lasts two years. This is unfortunately not within the reach of everyone, he deplored.
In addition to the cost of treatment, Charrouk called for the multiplication of oncology centers in order to reduce the travel of patients, as well as reception homes for patients coming from remote regions for treatment and a solution to avoid drug shortages.
