Morocco Repatriated Over 4,000 Deceased Expatriates During COVID Border Closures

The repatriation of the remains of Moroccans who died abroad has been the subject of a parliamentary question to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
Suspended in March 2020, due to the restrictive measures taken to fight the spread of Covid, the process of repatriating Moroccans who died abroad has resumed with the decision to exceptionally reopen the borders, said Nasser Bourita, in response to the question addressed to him by the deputies.
For the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, during this period, his department covered the burial expenses of more than 322 remains of members of the Moroccan community who died abroad and were living in extreme poverty.
Regarding the remains repatriated outside the health crisis period, Nasser Bourita stated that they number 3,887, stressing that due to the circumstances, these repatriated remains were first placed in cold rooms or temporarily stored in the cemetery warehouse.
