Morocco Reopens Airspace February 7, Maritime Travel Remains Uncertain

While the Moroccan authorities have announced the reopening of airspace to flights departing and arriving in Morocco from February 7, there is, so far, no visibility on the resumption of maritime transport. The Moroccan decision only concerns air transport.

On Thursday, the Moroccan government announced the reopening of airspace to flights departing and arriving in Morocco from February 7. "This decision comes in accordance with the legal provisions relating to the management of the state of health emergency and following the recommendations of the scientific and technical commission and taking into account the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the kingdom," it said in a statement.

Will maritime transport also resume? In a statement to Le360, an official at the Ministry of Transport and Logistics said that nothing new has been reported so far. The maritime lines connecting the ports of Tangier Med and Nador to the Spanish, French and Italian ports remain suspended until further notice. The government has not yet issued any directives regarding maritime borders, he specified.

The Moroccan authorities had suspended on November 29, 2021 all passenger flights to and from Morocco, as well as passenger maritime transport to and from the kingdom, due to the rapid spread of the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, particularly in Europe and Africa. This decision was also motivated by the desire to preserve the achievements made by Morocco in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and to protect the health of citizens.
