Morocco Releases Algerian Soldiers After Brief Border Crossing Incident

A commander and four Algerian army soldiers were released by the Moroccan authorities after straying into the Moroccan side of the border, near M’Hamid El Ghizlane.
The small group, in a vehicle, was looking for truffles when they crossed the demarcation line late in the morning. They were released the same day, once their identity was confirmed by the Moroccan authorities.
The Royal Gendarmerie and Moroccan border guards chose de-escalation. An attitude that contrasts with that of the Algerian authorities during previous border incidents. One recalls the Moroccan vacationers who had been targeted by Algerian army gunfire on the maritime border, in the eastern region.
The information was disseminated by the Geopolitical Institute Horizons (IGH). In a context of tensions between the two countries, Morocco’s gesture is intended to be appeasing. Border incidents have occurred in the past between the two neighbors.
