Morocco Refutes Claims of High Cadmium in Phosphate Fertilizers Exported to Europe

The allegations that Moroccan phosphate fertilizers are "naturally very high in cadmium" are false.
Is the French channel M6 trying to undermine the reputation of Moroccan phosphate? In the report titled "Bread, fruits, vegetables: revelations about a new scandal", the French channel accuses Moroccan phosphate fertilizers of containing too much cadmium, of being "naturally very high in cadmium". Unfounded accusations, as all fertilizers exported by Morocco to the European market strictly comply with the maximum cadmium content in phosphate fertilizers marketed in Europe set at 60 mg/kg of P2O5, according to European regulation (EU) 2019/1009 which came into force in 2022.
To show that it is respectful of its trade relations with the European Union (EU) and other international partners, Morocco goes beyond European regulations. Since January 1, 2025, all Moroccan phosphate fertilizers destined for the European Union display a cadmium content of less than 20 mg/kg of P2O5, a level well below regulatory requirements. Thus, these products are not only eligible for the "low cadmium content" labeling provided for by the European regulation, but they also comply with the recommendations of the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (Anses).
