Morocco to Receive 1.8 Million AstraZeneca Vaccines Through WHO’s Covax Program

Morocco is benefiting from an additional 1,881,160 doses under the WHO’s Covax initiative. The first forecast regarding the distribution of vaccines to participating countries was published this Wednesday by the Global Alliance for Vaccines (Gavi), the body that manages the initiative.
This batch of vaccines was developed by the University of Oxford, in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. It should be received by the end of June. In total, more than 337 million doses of vaccines have been developed by AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech to cover the needs of 3.3% of the population. 15% of these doses will be available in March while 56% will be distributed by the end of June 2021. The remaining doses will be delivered during the second half of 2021.
Each country receives its quota which is proportional to the size of its population. While the kingdom receives nearly 2 million doses, India will receive 97.2 million in the second half, 17.2 million for Pakistan, 16 million for Nigeria, 13.7 million for Indonesia, 12.2 million for Bangladesh and 10.7 million for Brazil. To distribute these vaccines, they must be certified by the WHO which has already authorized the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine. The certification of AstraZeneca/Oxford should take place in the very near future.
These 1,881,160 doses should be added to the 65 million ordered from Sinopharm and AstraZeneca. As of February 4, 2021, Morocco has vaccinated 351,723 people.
