Morocco Recalls Ambassador to France Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Mohammed Benchaâboun is no longer officially the Moroccan ambassador to France, according to a decision by King Mohammed VI published in the official gazette.
Mr. Benchaâboun’s functions as ambassador to the French Republic ended on January 19, 2023, as specified in the official gazette (JO).
This decision comes at a critical time in the diplomatic relationship between Morocco and France. In October of the previous year, at the height of the crisis, Mr. Benchaaboun had been appointed to head the Mohammed VI Fund for Investment.
Despite a slight warming of relations between the two countries following the visit of the French Foreign Minister to Rabat in December, the position of ambassador remains vacant and it is not certain that the situation will improve in the near future, as some Moroccan officials blame France for the recent decisions of the European Parliament against Morocco.
