Morocco’s Real Estate Developers Take Action Amid COVID-19 Crisis
Friday 1 May 2020, by
The real estate sector, like many other sectors in Morocco, has been weakened by the covid-19 pandemic, which has forced the state to take strict measures including confinement and a state of emergency. Among the actions taken to mitigate the shock, the National Federation of Real Estate Developers (FNPI) has set up a crisis unit that has resulted in the realization of a number of steps.
The FNPI did not want to sit idle, waiting for the end of the health crisis. It first launched an operation to collect contributions from the federation’s direct members and regional associations to the Covid-19 Fund. This initiative has so far resulted in the collection of 80 million dirhams paid into the Fund.
To this amount are added material contributions such as "donations of food baskets, the provision of developers’ property as hospital support or as a residence for medical staff in different regions of the kingdom". After this "patriotic duty", the developers focused on identifying the main ills affecting the sector during this crisis period, reports aujourdhui.ma.
After various videoconference meetings on the various problems generated by covid-19, the FNPI addressed the parliamentary body to whom it submitted a summary report on the construction sector. The president of the federation met with the Minister of Economy, Finance and Public Administration Reform to "convey the difficulties and grievances of the sector".
The acceleration of administrative procedures slowed down by confinement is at the top of the list of grievances presented by the developers. This required the adoption of digitized file exchanges by the National Agency for Land Conservation, Cadastre and Cartography. It should also be noted "the effective implementation of processing through digital platforms of building permit application files". According to the newspaper, "about fifteen measures are under study and instruction at the Ministry of Housing, Urban Planning and City Policy".
