Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to Sahel Security at G5 Summit

Morocco took part on February 15 and 16 in the N’Djamena summit which brought together the G5 Sahel countries and France, despite the many steps taken by Algeria to exclude it from the Sahelo-Saharan file. During this meeting, Saâdeddine El Othmani stressed that Morocco has never been a mere observer of the security developments shaking the region for many years.
"We stand in solidarity with our friends in the countries of the region to face the dangers that threaten them and threaten us directly," the head of government said in his speech to the participants in the group’s meeting, reiterating the kingdom’s commitment to continue its support for the G5 Sahel "defense academy" based in Nouakchott and train officers from these countries in Moroccan military academies.
El Othmani took the opportunity to present the merits of the Moroccan approach in the fight against terrorism, defending human development in the Sahel and a reform of the religious field, stressing that the king, in his capacity as Commander of the Faithful, always wants to continue the training of Sahel imams at the Mohammed VI Institute. He thus recalled that 937 people from the countries of the Economic Community of West African States are already taking courses there.
Militarily involved in the region for years, France would like, failing a withdrawal, to lighten its commitment. Thus, the objective of the N’Djamena summit is to put politics back at the center of the crisis settlement by accelerating the return of the States, durably curbing the jihadist expansion and thus allowing, in the long term, a lightening of the French device in the Sahel. A real challenge!
