Morocco Ranks Among Top 5 Greenhouse Gas Emitters in North Africa

Pollution from the construction, industry and private transport sectors positions Morocco in the top 5 of greenhouse gas emitting countries.
These three main culprits of climate change are not on trial for air pollution. This year, the accusing fingers are pointed at global fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
In 2019, global CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels, industry and cement plants are expected to reach 37 billion tons, up 0.6% from the previous year, according to results published in the journals Nature Climate Change, Environmental Research Letters and Earth System Science Data.
The 51st largest emitter of fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) in the world, Morocco emitted 66 tons of this harmful gas last year. It ranks far behind Algeria (34th) and ahead of Tunisia (74th). In North Africa, Morocco claims the title of the third largest GHG emitter, behind Egypt, first, and Algeria, second, followed by Libya, Tunisia and Mauritania.
The lowest CO2 emitters are Yemen (10, 103rd globally), Syria (28, 78th globally) and Palestine (3.2, 144th globally). China, on the other hand, is the world’s largest emitter of CO2, followed by the United States and Europe.
