Morocco Ranks 88th in Global Gender Equality Index, Falling Short of UN Goals

Despite Morocco’s promises to work for gender equality, the facts have once again disavowed the battery of measures taken in this direction. Indeed, in the global ranking of gender equality, Equal Measures 2030, the kingdom has just found itself in 88th place, far from the much-desired ideal.

Morocco is far from realizing the cherished wish of gender equality. On this, Driss Jettou, the first president of the Court of Auditors, who boasted last month of Morocco’s good level in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, has just suffered a stinging disavowal. This comes from the Equal Measures 2030 report.

Indeed, according to Hespress, which brandishes the data from this report, "the kingdom has scored 59.3 points", thus finding itself far behind Arab countries in Africa, notably Tunisia (66.0 points) and Algeria (66.9 points), but remains quite close to Egypt (59.7 points).

To show that Morocco is still far from its goal, the same source specifies that "the visual ranking indicates that the kingdom is in the box of countries that should make more efforts to improve their situation". In other words, the initiatives taken to improve the condition of women, in terms of access to employment, education, health, and in many other areas, are still far from producing satisfactory results.

However, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region ranks 4th in the ranking (with a score of 60.8 points), with Algeria (66.9 points) and Tunisia (66.0 points) among the best countries in the region. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia (57.4 points), Iraq (52.3 points) and Yemen (44.7 points) "find themselves in the box of poor students when it comes to gender equality," the same source said.
