Morocco Ranks 4th Globally in COVID-19 Response Spending, EU Study Finds

With 2.7% of GDP, Morocco ranks fourth in the global ranking of economies that have devoted a significant budget to the fight against coronavirus. This is indicated by the study report on the impacts of coronavirus on the Moroccan economy carried out by the commercial section of the EU economic delegation.
According to the delegation, Morocco is one of the first countries to have declared a state of health emergency and imposed confinement at an advanced stage of the pandemic’s spread. The kingdom made these decisions by learning from the experiences of its neighboring countries and its limited infrastructure capacities.
Morocco thus ranks 4th globally in terms of resources mobilized as a percentage of GDP, according to data from the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF) of the Ministry of Finance and those developed by Goldman Sachs. The kingdom has mobilized nearly 2.7% of GDP to secure this position. Sweden (6% of GDP), Chile (4.7% of GDP) and New Zealand (4% of GDP) are in the top 3 of this ranking.
The commercial section of the EU economic delegation also recalls that King Mohammed VI had ordered on March 15 the creation of a special fund for the management of the coronavirus pandemic. In total, more than 27 billion dirhams have already been mobilized.
