Morocco Ranks 11th Globally for Lowest Alcohol Consumption, Study Finds

Morocco is in the top 17 countries where the percentage of non-drinkers of alcohol is the highest in the world, according to a compilation of figures that has just been published. All these countries have a predominantly Muslim population.
With a rate of 94.6%, Morocco ranks 11th in the ranking of countries with the highest percentage of non-drinkers, compiled by Insider Monkey. All kinds of alcoholic beverages are marketed in the kingdom where, the consumption of alcohol is not illegal. However, the legislator is concerned about where and how people consume alcohol. Morocco even produces its own beers, wines and liqueurs. And, the consumption of alcohol brings in a lot of money to the state. Import taxes on alcohol and wine generated $86 million, while import taxes on beer replenished the state’s coffers by $106 million, according to the 2021 budget execution report.
Libya (99.5%) tops this ranking. It is followed by Afghanistan (99.1%), Yemen (99%), Mauritania (98%) and Kuwait (97.9%). Then come Syria (97.7%), the Solomon Islands (97.1%), Pakistan (96.5%), Iran (96%) and Sudan (95.2%). Egypt (94.3%) is in 12th place in this ranking, while Jordan (93.9%) takes 13th place. They are followed by Iraq (93.8%) and Algeria (93.5%). Saudi Arabia (93.4%) and the Comoros (93.3%) close the podium.
To compile its ranking, Insider Monkey consulted the World Health Organization’s Global Health Observatory to collect the necessary data. According to the site, lifetime abstinence is defined as the proportion of adults (15 years and older) in a given population who have not consumed alcohol. Globally, 35% of men do not drink alcohol, compared to 55% of women. All these countries where the percentage of non-drinkers is the highest have a predominantly Muslim population. In the Muslim religion, the consumption of alcohol is one of the most important prohibitions.
