Morocco to Raise Minimum Wage by 5% Across Multiple Sectors

In application of the agreement signed on April 30, 2022 between the government and the unions, the guaranteed minimum interprofessional wage (SMIG) will increase by 5% as of September 1 in the sectors of industry, commerce, agriculture and liberal professions. The decree will soon be approved by the Council of Ministers.
The government will approve the decree on the determination of the SMIG at its first meeting after the annual leave, reports the Arabic daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. Once approved, the text will be published in the official bulletin before entering into force. The increase in the SMIG had been decided in September 2022 during a meeting between the government, the unions and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM). The social agreement provides for a general increase of 10% of the SMIG for one hour of work for the liberal professions and the industry and commerce sectors over two years.
A 5% increase was thus scheduled for September 2022. And, a new 5% increase will be applied as of September 2023. The revaluation aims to relieve employees. Last year, the inflation rate reached 7.7%. An increase due to a 12% increase in food prices and 5% in other products. Until now, the gross monthly minimum wage has reached 2,828.72 dirhams in the industry, commerce and liberal professions sectors. As for the net salary, it amounts to 2,638.05 dirhams. The gross minimum wage in agriculture is 1,994.20 dirhams while the net salary reaches 1,859.79 dirhams.
In 2019, the legal minimum wage (SMIG) for one hour of work for the liberal professions and the industry and commerce sectors was set at 14.81 dirhams, while the SMIG for one day of work in the agricultural sector was set at 76.70 dirhams.
