Morocco Prosecutes Over 25,000 for Violating COVID-19 Emergency Measures

Thousands of Moroccans have fallen under the law for violating preventive health measures. Some are being prosecuted for violating the state of health emergency, while others have been detained.

A total of 25,857 individuals have been prosecuted by the public prosecutor’s offices in the courts of the kingdom for violation of the state of health emergency. 1,566 of them have been brought before the courts in a state of detention since the entry into force on March 24 of Decree-Law No. 2.20.292, according to a press release from the Presidency of the Public Prosecutor’s Office reported by the Map.

The press release indicates that 2,593 are being prosecuted for failure to wear a protective mask out of the 25,857. The prosecuted persons are as follows: 25,203 adults and 654 minors, including 25,068 men and 789 women, the press release specifies. Some people prosecuted for violating the state of health emergency have been sentenced by the courts of the kingdom to prison sentences and fines.

The DGSN informs that these arrests are part of the prerogatives of preserving public order and the safety of citizens. This is why a rigorous application of the law will be made to all those who, through their deviant behavior, endanger the health and safety of other citizens, threatens the public prosecutor’s office.

The Presidency of the Public Prosecutor’s Office also stated that the public prosecutor’s offices have opened 93 judicial investigations that have led to the prosecution of 70 people, including 19 under arrest. These investigations are part of the fight against false information or fake news about covid-19 launched by the authorities.
