Morocco Prosecutes Factory Owners for Violating COVID-19 Safety Measures

After judicial investigations, the Prosecutor of the King near the Court of Appeal of Safi decided to initiate legal proceedings against the managers of the Unimer canning factory in Safi. They are accused of violating the provisions of the state of health emergency.
In a press release, the Prosecutor’s Office recalled that these investigations revealed a suspicion of failure to comply with the prevention and precautionary measures issued by the public authorities in order to curb the spread of this epidemic situation and ensure the safety of people.
In addition to the managers of this cannery, several people in charge of monitoring the implementation of the health protocol in the establishment, as well as the managers in charge of transporting the workers, will also be punished for violation of the provisions of Article 4 of the decree-law relating to the state of health emergency. They will also be summoned to appear before the court to be tried in accordance with the law, the same document specifies.
In early July, nearly 400 cases tested positive in the city of Safi within the industrial unit of the Unimer group belonging to the El Alj family. At the time, this negligence had led to the temporary closure of all the fish canning units.
