Morocco Proposes Stricter Well Drilling Laws Following Child’s Tragic Death

The president of the Istiqlal group in the House of Representatives, Noureddine Moudian, has seized on the tragic accident of Rayan to call for a revision of the regulations on well drilling.
The MP has called for a halt to the anarchic drilling of wells that do not comply with the regulations in force, deploring the fact that the wells dug during the drought period are no longer backfilled. In a statement to Hespress, Moudian indicated that Rayan’s tragic incident reminds us of the urgent need to revise the regulations on well drilling by simplifying the legal procedures.
"It is our duty to alert the authorities and raise public awareness of the danger that anarchic wells pose to the lives of citizens and even animals," warned the deputy, assuring that the issue will be studied in parliament. "Things are not yet clear to undertake legislative action on this subject," tempers for his part, Abderrahim Chahid, an opposition MP, who recalls that the Ministry of the Interior has already taken action against abandoned wells.
For the latter, the laws exist but "what is lacking is rigor in the application of these laws, particularly with regard to unused wells." This phenomenon constitutes a "time bomb", mainly in the southern regions of the kingdom where drought is raging, he notes.
