Morocco Proposes Law to Limit Pet Dog Ownership in Urban Areas

Lawmakers want to regulate the canine industry in Morocco. In this context, a bill has been tabled by the Socialist parliamentary group in parliament to make it much more difficult to own dogs.
The anarchic development of breeding and possession of dogs by individuals worries the parliamentarians, reports Aujourd’hui Le Maroc. This text aims to once and for all prohibit having more than one pet in an apartment, regardless of the breed.
In doing so, the deputies want to fill the legal void that exists in this matter. They believe that recent years have been marked by the exponential increase in dog breeding and the possession of one or more of these canines in the same house.
According to the authors of this bill, the presence of dogs in residential buildings often leads to disputes that end up in court. In short, the deputies want to double the financial penalty already provided for by the law relating to the protection of people against the danger of dogs. Any offender is liable to a fine of 400 to 1,000 dirhams (the current law provides for a fine ranging from 200 to 500 dirhams).
In addition, the fine must also apply to the owners of several dogs as well as in the event of failure to present a health record to the authorities during walks in open spaces and public places, specifies the same bill.
