Morocco Proposes New Law to Combat Used Car Fraud and Protect Buyers

The parliamentary group of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) has submitted a bill to strengthen controls and establish a national digital system to combat fraud in the used car sector, particularly odometer tampering and concealment of the true condition of vehicles.
This text aims to modify articles 66, 67, and 88 of the Highway Code to control mileage data and accident history of used cars. The parliamentary proposal also intends to address the lack of coordination between insurance companies and technical inspection centers, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
"These loopholes allow severely damaged, worn-out, or accident-damaged vehicles to be resold while concealing their true condition, exposing buyers to significant risks, particularly in terms of road safety," notes the daily.
To put an end to these illegal practices and protect consumers, the text provides for the creation of a centralized database of used vehicles that would provide information on technical inspections and repairs carried out, as well as accidents suffered.
According to a recent study conducted on platforms specializing in vehicle sales, 35% of used car buyers claim to have been victims of fraud. To combat these practices, experts recommend tightening regulations and conducting awareness campaigns for buyers.
