Morocco Prioritizes Rail Upgrades Over High-Speed Expansion to Fez

Morocco is pulling out all the stops to modernize its rail network. The stated objective of the National Railway Office (ONCF) is to improve connections between the main cities of the kingdom, but without succumbing to the temptation of "all TGV".

Contrary to the rumors that were circulating, Fez will not be connected to the high-speed network before 2030. Sources close to the file have confirmed that this deadline is not currently envisaged.

The ONCF is focusing its efforts on two priority areas: optimizing existing infrastructure and developing the rapid regional rail network (RER). The aim is to make the current network more profitable by increasing train speeds and improving connections between lines.

"The goal is to reduce travel times by 30% to 50%," say ministerial sources cited by Medias24. Concretely, the gradual replacement of the rail fleet with more efficient trains, capable of running at over 200 km/h, should help bring Marrakech and Fez closer together, even in the absence of a high-speed line.

The extension of the Tangier-Kenitra line to Marrakech remains the absolute priority. The work should be completed by 2029 or early 2030. It is only after that that the ONCF will be able to look into the case of Fez.

The project of a line serving the imperial city is nevertheless included in Morocco’s bid for the 2030 World Cup. A way for the kingdom to display its ambitions in terms of rail infrastructure development.

To finance this modernization, the ONCF has launched a vast renewal plan for its fleet, providing for the acquisition of 100 new trains. A contract has also been signed with France for the supply of TGVs. Finally, the ONCF relies on French expertise for the realization of the high-speed line Kenitra-Marrakech, entrusted to the SYSTRA/EGIS group.
