Morocco’s Prime Minister Hints at Cabinet Reshuffle, Possible Istiqlal Party Inclusion

Saturday 31 August 2019, by Bladi.net

The Moroccan Prime Minister, Saad-Eddine El Othmani, seized the opportunity of a meeting held by the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) last Monday to hint at the possibility of the Istiqlal Party entering the Government. The names of the outgoing ministers were also mentioned.

According to the daily Assabah, which cites a source close to the Lamp Party, Slimane Amrani, Deputy Secretary General of the PJD, had not revealed all the topics discussed during the said meeting in a statement published on the party’s official website.

Indeed, according to this media, "the political debate took up a large part of the meeting. The members of the General Secretariat discussed the challenges emphasized by the royal speech on the Throne Feast and presented ideas and proposals that address the conditions for increasing the effectiveness of government work". And, Slimane Amrani added that they did not address the issue of ministerial seats or the names of the ministers who remain in the Executive, which, according to him, at this stage, was "a premature issue".

However, the daily obtained the information from its source that the ministerial reshuffle was at the center of the discussions and that the names of the ministers who should leave the Government have been mentioned. Thus, several departures are announced and not the least.

This is the case, for example, of Lahcen Daoudi, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government, Mohamed Yatim, Minister of Employment and Professional Integration, Najib Boulif, Secretary of State for Transport, Khalid Samadi, Secretary of State to the Minister of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, who are on the list of ministers who will have to give up their positions to new personalities. But also, Nezha El Ouafi, Secretary of State for Sustainable Development and Jamila El Moussali, Secretary of State for Crafts and the Social Economy, are expected to leave the Government.

According to some sources close to the political parties, talks will be held between the Head of Government, El Othmani, and the majority parties, including the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), the Popular Movement (MP), the Constitutional Union (UC) and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), with a view to defining the structure of the next Government.
