Morocco’s Prime Minister Denies Reports of City Travel Bans Amid COVID Concerns

Saâdeddine El Othmani, head of government, has provided a formal denial of information reporting a ban on access to certain cities in the kingdom due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The head of government denied the information that the Moroccan authorities have closed access to eight cities including Casablanca, Marrakech and Tangier. He specified that the communiqué currently circulating on social networks dates back to 2020.
In a joint press release published in July 2020, the Ministries of the Interior and Health had announced that travel to and from eight cities - Tangier, Tetouan, Fez, Meknes, Casablanca, Berrechid, Settat and Marrakech - will be prohibited. A measure justified by "the considerable increase in cases of Covid-19 contamination" and "the non-compliance by the majority of citizens with preventive measures - social distancing, wearing a mask".
Since June, Morocco has been facing a resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the authorities have not yet taken such a decision. As of July 24, the coronavirus report shows 575,162 cases of contamination, 542,078 recoveries and 9,559 deaths.
