Morocco’s Prime Minister Defends ’Difficult’ Israel Normalization Decision

In an interview given on Tuesday to the Al Jazeera channel, the head of the Moroccan government spoke about the normalization of diplomatic relations with Israel. According to Saad Eddine El Othmani, "countries in their history are led to make difficult choices".
The head of the executive was highly anticipated on the subject, especially since one of the government ministers, Nasser Bourita, had stated that the rapprochement between Morocco and Israel could not be described as normalization. On the question asked by the journalist, El Othmani mentioned the American recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, the advantages that this can generate for Morocco diplomatically and commercially. "Eighteen countries have opened consulates in Laâyoune or Dakhla, these countries are no longer content with simple declarations but are taking action on the ground supporting the Moroccanness of the Sahara," emphasizes El Othmani.
He will be relaunched several times by the journalist who insisted on knowing the reasons why he is talking about the news related to the Sahara, when the question asked deals with the normalization of Israeli-Moroccan relations. He will eventually confide that "obviously this was a difficult choice, especially during this period," before stressing: "I would like to assure my Palestinian brothers that a unified and strong Morocco is all the more capable of supporting the Palestinian cause."
It must be said that El Othmani, the current secretary general of the PJD, has been seriously criticized for his "silence". More than 48 hours after the announcement made by Donald Trump, the majority party finally published a press release signed by the number 2 of the PJD, Slimane El Omrani. A press release published late and which does not at all mention Israel.
