Morocco’s Press Freedom Ranks Low in Middle East, Conference Reveals

Morocco has been cited as a poor performer in terms of press freedom, among the countries in the sub-region, during the 2nd edition of the International Journalism Conference held from March 17 to 19 in Tunis.
During this meeting, which brought together hundreds of journalists from several countries, the situation of journalists in Arab and Middle Eastern countries was analyzed. The picture is worrying according to the professionals.
More specifically, Morocco and Yemen are among the countries where the independence of journalists would be undermined. Their working conditions would be anything but a sinecure, they estimate. These two countries were therefore at the center of the focus during the proceedings.
It was the testimonies of journalists from these countries that served as subjects during the panels. "In 2002, the kingdom was 89th in the global press freedom ranking produced by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). In 2021, it is 136th," said Moroccan journalist Aboubakar Jamai.
And he added: "Today, investigative journalists in Morocco can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Two of them are in prison. And I am a third one."
