Morocco Prepares 7.4 Million Sheep and Goats for Eid al-Adha Celebration

As part of the preparations for Eid al-Adha 1440, a total of 7.4 million head of sheep and goats are available. This figure, communicated by the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA), takes into account a herd whose health status is "satisfactory".
A few days before Eid al-Adha 1440, ONSSA is pulling out all the stops to make the 2019 edition of this celebration a success. To this end, several action plans are being implemented and take into account the health aspect and the monitoring of the quality of livestock. Thus, 236,000 breeding and fattening units have been registered with the ONSSA veterinary services, an increase of 71% compared to 2018. At this rate, the Office intends to reach around 8 million identified sheep and goats by the end of July.
This plan also concerns the registration of breeders-fatteners and the identification of sheep and goats, the control of water quality, that of animal feed, veterinary medicines, as well as the control of droppings, at the exit of poultry farms and their destination.
Among the registered services, we can mention, among others, 658 control outings, 381 samples of animal feed taken, 500 samples of meat and 25 samples of water, as well as 331 passes for poultry droppings issued. These checks resulted in the drawing up of 10 reports of offenses, sent to the justice system, including 3 cases concerning the use of poultry droppings for animal fattening, in the regions of Casablanca and Rabat. In addition, 7 cases relate to the sale of veterinary drugs.
To ensure the marketing network for sheep and goats, 30 additional markets, including 8 newly created this year, are available.
