Morocco Prepares 8 Million Livestock for Eid Al Adha Sacrifice

According to Dr. Abdelghani Azzi, the director of food product control at the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA), the number of livestock could reach 8 million on the eve of Eid Al Adha.
In order to update its database, ONSSA has been conducting the registration of sheep and goat breeding and fattening farms since January 2020. And on April 22, it launched the identification operation of livestock (sheep and goats) planned for the Eid Al Adha sacrifice.
Thus, a total of 242,000 farms have been registered and the identified animals reach 7.2 million and could reach 8 million on the eve of Eid, says Azzi, who specifies that for marketing, a series of measures have been taken by the Office. These include the control of the sources and production units of the livestock feed, as well as the raw materials used and their production methods.
"Before any purchase, the consumer must choose an ’identified’ animal with a yellow plastic tag, bearing a unique serial number in the form of a sheep’s head with the mention ’Eid Al Adha’ and a five-pointed star in reference to the national flag. He must also check the health of the animal and then ensure that the sanitary conditions for keeping the animal are guaranteed," advises Azzi.
Sanitary measures must also be observed during and after the immolation, in particular the wearing of masks and hand washing with soap and water or with hydroalcoholic solutions, he warns before stressing the need to disinfect the tools and utensils used for the occasion.
