Morocco Plans Restrictions on TikTok to Combat ’Harmful’ Content

Faced with the deviations observed on certain social networks, particularly TikTok, the Moroccan authorities plan to implement a policy aimed at restricting the use of the Chinese platform.
In his response to a written question on the psychological and mental consequences of the use of TikTok, the Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication announced the upcoming implementation of a plan to restrict the use of this Chinese platform, which has negative effects on the behavior of young Moroccans and on Moroccan society in terms of values.
Through this measure, the Moroccan government intends to limit the dissemination of "offensive and harmful" content, such as harassment, insults, slander, fraud, incitement to hatred, violent and discriminatory discourse. The Ministry of Youth, in collaboration with the Higher Institute of Media and Communication, is working to strengthen the culture of media education, said Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid.
This will involve organizing awareness campaigns and teaching media education to students in public and private schools. It will also be a matter of highlighting the consequences of the use of TikTok for Moroccan society through programs or newsletters involving experts (in human rights, law, education).
