Morocco Passes Health Emergency Bill, Expanding Government Powers During Pandemic

The bill 23.20 approving decree-law No. 2.20.292 relating to the provisions relating to the state of health emergency and the procedures for its declaration, was adopted this Wednesday, May 7, by a majority of votes with the exception of one abstention.

This bill completes the procedure provided for by the Constitution, in particular Article 81, which requires the aforementioned decree-law to be submitted to parliament for approval, reports the MAP.

According to the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, the government had approved on March 23 a decree-law on the provisions relating to the state of health emergency and the measures for its declaration. This text, he recalls, was unanimously adopted by the two committees concerned in the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors, before its publication in the official bulletin on March 24.

According to the minister, it is in accordance with this text that the state of health emergency has been decreed throughout the national territory until April 20, and extended until May 20, with a view to ensuring optimal implementation of the measures taken to protect people and curb the spread of the covid-19 epidemic.

As usual, the minister again called for respect for the measures and directives related to the state of health emergency, in order to ensure the safety of citizens and the country in general.
