Morocco’s Parliament to Adopt Amazigh as Official Working Language

Like Arabic, the Amazigh language will soon be recognized as a working language within the House of Councillors in Morocco.
The architect of this reform is the President of the House of Councillors, Hakim Benchamach. Amazigh will be imposed as a working language during plenary sessions and within the institution’s structures.
This reform takes into account the provisions of Article 32 of Organic Law 26.16 on the Amazigh language. The draft action plan relating to the integration of Amazigh to the presidents of the groups will be entrusted "to the coordination commission between the two chambers of Parliament as well as to the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture". This decision was made during a meeting initiated by the President of the House of Councillors.
For now, no date has been set for the entry into force of the project to revitalize the Amazigh language in the House of Councillors. In July 2019, the draft organic law 26.16 aimed at the generalization of the Amazigh language as an official language provided for in the new Constitution had been adopted by the House of Representatives.
