Morocco Overtakes Spain in EU Watermelon Market, Sales Surge 248%

Morocco sold 248.8% more watermelons than Spain on the markets of the European Union (EU) in the month of April, according to data from the Euroestacom (ICEX-Eurostat) statistical services.

In April 2023, Morocco sold 9.14 million kilos of watermelon on the Community markets, compared to 2.62 million kilos for Spain, reports Horto Info. Since 2016, Morocco has caught up with Spain in terms of watermelon sales volume in the EU, with 12.02 million kilos sold, compared to 12.13 million kilos for Spain. The previous year, Spain had sold 6.75 million kilos of watermelon in the EU, compared to 2.71 million kilos for Morocco, recalls the same source.

In April 2023, Mauritania was the leading supplier of watermelons to the EU, with 18.57 million kilos, followed by Costa Rica with 11.65 million kilos. Morocco comes in third place with 9.14 million kilos, ahead of Senegal with 8.02 million kilos, Panama with 2.84 million kilos, and Spain with 2.62 million kilos.

Morocco has also surpassed Spain in terms of the price of watermelons sold in the EU in April. Moroccan watermelon was sold at an average price of 1.23 euros per kilo, for a total revenue of 11.29 million euros, while Spanish watermelon was sold at an average price of 1.05 euros per kilo for 2.76 million euros.
