Morocco’s Olive Production Surges 21% Despite Drought Challenges

A strong increase in olive production has been recorded in Morocco during the 2021-2022 agricultural season. It is estimated at nearly 2 million tons, an increase of 21% compared to last year.
Thus, the national olive production for the 2021-2022 season is estimated at 1.96 million tons, according to figures published by the Ministry of Agriculture during a meeting with industry professionals.
The latter insisted on the need to consolidate the sector by focusing on increasing the area, improving production and distribution channels and marketing, increasing the number of processing units and promoting water-efficient irrigation systems. The sector owes its stability today to the Green Morocco Plan, state aid and the efforts of professionals.
Table olives now occupy third place in the trade balance, while olive oil is ranked 9th. Despite the obstacles, the sector generates some 51 million working days per year and contributes 20% to the coverage of edible vegetable oil needs.
