The Nador West Med megaport could start its activities in 2025, announced Sanae Elamrani, the director of ports and maritime domains of the Moroccan Ministry of Equipment.
The construction work on Nador West Med has reached an execution level of 85% and will be completed by mid-2024, said the official, during the Hispanic-Moroccan business forum held on Wednesday in Casablanca. The megaport will have a capacity of 3 million containers, 25 million tons of hydrocarbons and 3 million tons of goods, she specifies.
Nador West Med will also have a free trade zone of nearly 8,000 hectares, added Sanae Elamrani, calling on Spanish businessmen to invest in this project, which is part of Morocco’s new strategy to develop its port infrastructure by 2030.
This strategy also includes the transformation of certain historic ports such as those of Nador city, Tangier city, Al Hoceima and part of the port of Casablanca, into tourist ports, details the official. Morocco has 43 commercial and fishing ports, and the port of Tanger Med, whose container traffic reached more than 7.5 million in 2022, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year.
