Morocco Moves to Limit NGO Corruption Complaints Against Elected Officials

Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi wants to prevent associations defending public property from filing complaints against elected officials, arguing that this action falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior.
During the oral question session in the House of Advisors, the minister opposed the complaints filed by associations defending public property against municipal presidents who are often suspected of corruption.
"There are those who have no association and have not held any constitutive assembly and call themselves the president of an association for the protection of public funds," he protested, warning against any attempt to undermine democracy. "Democracy is not about doing what one wants, but what must be done," he specified.
In this regard, Ouahbi announced that an amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure will be drafted, aimed at only authorizing the Ministry of the Interior to file complaints against elected officials. The new law will crack down on internet offenses, including defamation, insult and the publication of images on various platforms.
