Morocco Moves to Control Food Prices Ahead of Ramadan

The government plans to take urgent measures to curb the surge in prices of mass consumption products such as tomatoes, just days before the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
The authorities intend to act to lower the price of tomatoes and sardines during the month of Ramadan, informed sources told Al Oâmk Al Maghribi. These measures, which should be announced in the coming days, are not part of the usual measures taken each year before the month of Ramadan, such as price control and supply of food markets, the same sources specify. The decision would rather aim to preserve the purchasing power of Moroccans, we are reassured.
The price per kilo of tomatoes in some local and weekly markets in various regions of the kingdom has risen from 5 to 15 dirhams. The price of sardines, on the other hand, has exceeded 20 dirhams per kilogram.
