Morocco’s Mosque Reopenings Spark COVID-19 Concerns Amid Crowded Prayers

The resumption of Friday prayers in mosques, a measure decided by the government after several months of closure, could prove catastrophic. With the resurgence of new infections, the damage from this decision would be disastrous for the country.
The fervor with which the populations welcomed this decision to open the mosques could quickly fade, reports Challenge. The restrictive measures promised by the government to successfully meet this challenge without incident have been a mirage.
On the ground, the realities were different. In Casablanca, the epicenter of the coronavirus in Morocco, the mosques were crowded, without the slightest respect for the distancing measure. Worshippers stormed the streets under the helpless gaze of the security forces.
This resumption of Friday prayers in mosques could affect the daily toll. And the government could go back on its decision. A measure that will be difficult for it to take, specifies the same magazine.
The recommended solution is to resort to more organized communication in consultation with local authorities and worshippers. But first, it will have to ban prayers on the streets, without forcing the population, advises the same source.
