Morocco holds a prominent place in Moorish architectural heritage. In a selection dedicated to the finest examples of this style in the Mediterranean, Marrakech and Fès are highlighted through two emblematic monuments: the Ben Youssef Medersa and the Bou Inania Medersa.

Moorish architecture, also called Arabo-Andalusian, was born from the meeting of several influences, notably from the Arab world, the Iberian Peninsula, the Maghreb, as well as Roman, Byzantine and Persian heritage. It is recognized by its horseshoe arches, geometric patterns, zellige tilework, carved wood, pools and gardens organized around water.

In Marrakech, the Ben Youssef Medersa is presented as one of the great Moroccan examples of this refinement. Built in the 16th century under the Saadians, this former Quranic school, located in the heart of the medina, stands out for its zellige, its decorations carved in cedar wood and its finely worked plaster, as AD Magazine notes.

The Bou Inania Medersa of Fès is also among the selected monuments. Built in the 14th century, it holds a special place as it served as both a school and a mosque. Its minaret, symmetrical composition, mosaics and carved wood decorations make it one of the symbols of Marinid art.
