Morocco Modernizes Taxi Fleet: 56,000 Vehicles Renewed Under Government Program

The Moroccan Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, indicated that the taxi renewal program is a success. With figures to back it up, he specified that nearly 56,000 new vehicles have been renewed and put into circulation.
In response to an oral question, the Minister of the Interior declared to the House of Representatives that since the launch of the taxi renewal program, some 56,000 applications for the renewal of small and large taxis have been approved.
According to the figures provided by Abdelouafi Laftit, Morocco has 77,100 taxis, including 44,600 large taxis and 32,500 small taxis, and 150,000 professional drivers. In a circular note recently addressed to local authorities, walis and governors, the new conditions and criteria for the operation of taxi licenses are clearly defined. Henceforth, only professional drivers, holders of a trust license and a professional driver’s card, can claim the delegation contracts for taxi operating licenses with the beneficiaries of the licenses.
During his intervention, the minister stressed that his department has developed a working strategy based on five pillars: improving the mechanisms for regulating and controlling the sector, strengthening the professionalization of the profession, modernizing and improving the services offered, training and enhancing the skills of professional drivers, and upgrading the information system for taxi transport management.
