In Morocco, the Minister of the Interior threatens elected officials
Speaking on Wednesday on the sidelines of the examination of the budget of his ministry before the Committee on the Interior and Local Authorities at the House of Representatives, Abdelouafi Laftit threatened to take legal action against any elected official who illegally appropriates collective lands or diverts funds from their sales.
"Whoever has taken a piece of land belonging to the community, we will hold him responsible. Whoever has taken a property that does not belong to him must return it... It would be better for him to return it of his own free will, because otherwise we will go all the way. And whoever has taken a single dirham from the local community that does not belong to him, he would do better to return it... let him return it of his own free will, or he will be forced to do so," Laftit threatened.
The Minister of the Interior revealed that investigations are underway in Casablanca and other cities in order to detect these offenses and prosecute the persons involved. The member of the government also praised the role of the "pious, upright and truly patriotic" elected officials, regretting that a minority of elected officials "do not cooperate with the authorities and do not fulfill their duties" with a view to the judicial recovery of collective lands.
