Morocco’s $37 Million Laâyoune Desalination Plant Nears Completion, Set to Boost Water Supply in Southern Provinces

The Managing Director of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), visited the site housing the Laâyoune desalination plant on Monday. Abderrahim El Hafidi went to check on the progress of the work for the commissioning tests of this seawater desalination plant.
With a budget of 370 million dirhams (MDH), it should be commissioned before the end of 2021, assures the Managing Director of ONEE, who affirmed, in a statement to MAP that it is a "structuring and strategic project" for the southern provinces of the Kingdom and which will positively influence the development currently experienced by the region.
Abderrahim El Hafidi also specified that once completed, the plant will be able to meet the drinking water needs of the inhabitants of Laâyoune and El Marsa as well as the Foum El Oued and Tarouma centers beyond the 2035 horizon. The realization of the second phase of the project will consist of directly taking the seawater over a distance of 2 km and adapting it to the pre-treatment system to strengthen the supply of raw water to the desalination plant.
